Workshop on CBPP management Tanzania November 2007

The situation of CBPP in the SADC region is relatively well known. Its control is still an issue for the northern countries of the SADC region.

The Workshop held in Tanzania in November 2007 aimed at taking stock of all initiatives regarding the management of the disease.

It was also the conclusion of a one year support to the Laboratories of the SADC countries at risk ( mainly in the northern belt of the region), in order to improve the capacity and staff skills for the disease diagnostic.

The 15 years plan for controlling diseases in the region as established by CVO's in 2003 in Pretoria. In 2003, four clusters were identified

Progressive control of FMD and CBPP and enhanced preparedness for diseases exotic to the SADC region

CBPP Cluster 1: Primary endemic disease – Angola, Northern Tanzania

CBPP Cluster 2: Sporadic/Secondary endemic – Namibia North, Zambia, Tanzania South, DRC East

CBPP Cluster 3: Presumed free but at immediate risk – Namibia South, Botswana North, Zimbabwe Northwest, Malawi Mozambique North, DRC Rest

Cluster 4: Free at low risk - South Africa, Botswana South, Zimbabwe Rest, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique South, Mauritius, Seychelles

Cluster 5: Maintaining CBPP freedom – Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mauritius, Seychelles

The following map displays the geographical strutcture of the epidemics (and the endemic situation too) using 10 years of outbreak's data on CBPP occurence in the region compiled sources: clinical suspicions and confrmations, passive surveillance and some active surveillance data)
