 BENEDET

holds a PhD in Biology and a Master’s degree in Informatics. He specialises in multimedia and information systems. He joined CIRAD in 2008 to supervise information systems in ecology and forest dynamics. In CoForChange, he is in charge of the Internet and Extranet websites. Ilham BENTALEB

is a specialist in terrestrial and aquatic isotopic biogeochemistry. She teaches at the Institute of Evolutionary Sciences of the University of Montpellier 2 (UMR 5554) in the Paleoenvironments and Paleoclimates team. In CoForChange she is involved in the application of stable isotope geochemistry to describe the history and the causes of variations in the vegetal cover such as the passage of forest to savanna and vice-versa. ilham.bentaleb@univ-montp2.fr

Alain BILLAND

is a  forester. He is head of the in-house research unit  B&SEF (Tropical forest goods and ecosystem services) at CIRAD. Within CoForChange, he is in charge of coordination between regional entities of Central Africa (COMIFAC, Partnership for the forests of the Congo Basin, etc.). He also ensures cohesion between the project and the Forest Network of the Congo Basin, which is one of CIRAD's priority plans. alain.billand@cirad.fr

Laurent BREMOND

holds a PhD in Geosciences. He is a paleoecologist, specialist in the reconstruction of past tropical vegetation. He lectures at the Centre of Bio-Archaeological and Ecology of the Ecole pratique des hautes études (EPHE) since 2007. In CoForChange project he will determine the past tree cover in relation with disturbances (mainly fires) in order to interpret modern forest distribution. laurent.bremond@univ-montp2.fr

Corinne COHEN

Guillaume CORNU

Sabrina COSTE

holds a PhD in Forestry Sciences. She lived for five years in French Guiana where she worked on the diversity of functional leaf traits of tropical tree species in the UMR EcoFoG. In the CoForChange project, she is employed by the University of Aberdeen to quantify experimentally species’ shade and drought tolerance in Pointe-Noire (Republic of Congo), and to study the related functional traits and ecological strategies of the species. sabcost@hotmail.com

Jean-Louis DOUCET

is professor at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (University of Liege, Belgium) where he is head of the laboratory of Forestry of Tropical Regions since 2003. His work focuses on the ecology of woody species, their silviculture, and sustainable management methods of production forests. To this end, he collaborates with many logging companies committed to obtaining certification. Within CoForChange he coordinates the workpackage on the ongoing development of tree communities.jldoucet@ulg.ac.be

Charles DOUMENGE

holds a PhD in Tropical Botany and Forest Ecology (University of Montpellier 2). At CIRAD since 1999, he works on the biodiversity and biogeography of African forests. Bettina Engelbrecht

is a tropical plant ecologist at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. She lived and worked in Panama at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for more than 15 years. Nicolas FAUVET

Adeline FAYOLLE

is an agronomist and holds a PhD in Population Biology and Ecology. In CoForChange, she analyses tree species spatial patterns from forest inventories conducted by logging companies in the Congo Basin. Her work consists in defining a typology of these tropical forests and evaluating the effects of water availability and human disturbance on the structure of tropical tree communities. adeline.fayolle@cirad.fr

Vincent FREYCON

is a pedologist at CIRAD. In CoForChange, he maps the maximum capacity of the soil water reserve available for plants (workpackage 2); he develops a model of soil water reserve across time in relation to soil type, rainfall amounts, and evapotranspiration (workpackage 3); he performs measurements of the carbon isotopic composition to detect forest replacement by savannas during the Holocene (workpackage 4). vincent.freycon@cirad.fr

Jean-François GILLET

is a PhD student in Agronomy and Biological Engineering at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (Belgium) in the laboratory of Forestry of tropical and subtropical regions. In 2010, he was recruited by the University of Aberdeen to work within the CoForChange project. In workpackage 6, he carries out forestry inventories on sites identified by a cartographic analysis of management inventory data, and he participates in soil analyses and in studies on past disturbances. Results will allow to assess the past impact of fires and humans on today's vegetation, and to characterize its evolution. jf.gillet@natureplus.be

Valery GOND

holds a PhD in Geography. As a researcher at CIRAD, he works on characterising forest structures and human impacts in Amazonia and in the Congo Basin using remote sensing. Sylvie GOURLET-FLEURY

is a forest researcher and holds a PhD in Sciences with a specialization in Biometry. She has been working at CIRAD since 1989. She studies the impacts of anthropic disturbance on the structure, the dynamics and more generally the functioning of tropical moist forests, as well as interactions between disturbance and environmental conditions. Alain LARAQUE

holds a PhD in Hydrology. He is a researcher in hydrology at the Research Institute for development (IRD). He coordinates the Congo site of the Environmental Research Observatory ORE Hybam (2003-2013). In CoForChange, he coordinates workpackage 3 (Soil water availability and rainfall patterns). He couples satellite data with field data harvested from transects representative of the main forest biotopes that are present in the Congo Basin. alain.laraque@ird.fr

Jean MALEY

is a palynologist and specialises in paleoenvironments and paleoclimatology of tropical Africa, from Sahara to moist forests. Honorary Research Director at IRD, he is affiliated to the department of Paleoenvironments and Paleoclimatology at the University of Montpellier 2. He lectures occasionally at this university, as well as at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle of Paris. In CoForChange, he works on the history of forest vegetation and paleoenvironments in Central Africa. He showed that a major climatic disturbance that took place 2500 BP might be at the origin of a savanna corridor located in CoForChange studied area. This disturbance might also have played a role in the extension of monodominant Gilbertiodendron dewevrei  forests. jmaley@univ-montp2.fr

Julie MORIN

Julie Morin is a 2nd year Master's degree student at the Ecole pratique des hautes études, under the direction of Laurent Brémond and Jean-François Gillet. During her training course at the Centre of Bio-Archaeology and Ecology (Montpellier), she analyses charcoals in soils to study past disturbances (fires). Richard OSLISLY

is a specialist in the archaeology of Central Africa. He is a tropical naturalist who works on the long-term impact of man on the forest environment at the Research Institute for Development (IRD - UMR 208 IRD/MNHN). His role within CoForChange is to assess whether the presence of light loving tree species in the forest canopy of the region is more an anthropic than a climatic phenomenon. richard.oslisly@ird.fr

Alexandre PENNEC

is an engineer in land surveying and graduated from the “Ecole Supérieure des Géomètres et Topographes” (Le Mans, France). He specialized at the Université Laval (Quebec, Canada) in geomatics, especially remote sensing, geographic information systems and GPS positioning. He was recruited by  CIRAD in the context of the CoForChange project for a three-month period. Within workpackage 2  (map and characterize tree communities), he is in charge of mapping  forest biomes in the Congo Basin from low resolution satellite imagery (Terra-MODIS dataset). alexandre.pennec@hotmail.fr

Nicolas PICARD

holds a PhD in Forestry Science with a specialty in Statistics. Researcher at CIRAD, he holds a post in Gabon. In CoForChange, he will model vegetation dynamics in workpackage 7 (Decision-making tools).
